January 2023 Inkjet Installation Roundup

By Elizabeth Gooding / Published:

We are writing this in February 2023 about January 2023 and a lot of installations actually happened in 2022. There have also been some new references to 2021 installations that we had not previously reported. For example, Vomela Commercial Group reported the delivery of their new Ricoh Pro VC 40000 to a new facility in Springfield Virginia, but just recently reported being up and running (likely because they needed to finish putting the floor in!)

We also have a release from Screen and Maestri Etichette from January 2023 but it appears to refer to the press being installed in 2021: “One of our strongest qualities, flexibility is key to consistent growth. And even in the difficult COVID-year of 2021, it helped us achieve 9% revenue growth” said Moreno Maestri, owner and sales manager of Maestri Etichette. Did flexibility help them, or their nifty Screen press? Perhaps both!

We will break it all down for you and try not to confuse you any more than necessary. (Or you can skip to the table at the end.)

In January(ish) we are reporting on 15 press installations at 14 companies, down slightly from December. The pendulum has swung back to the US with 9 in the US, 4 in EU and 2 in UK as compared to December where we reported on 17 press installations with 12 of them in Europe and only 3 in US. We have highlighted the table below (in blue) with 3 presses that came to our attention only recently, but were actually installed at the end of 2021.

Before adjusting for the previous year installs, we show 9 sheetfed versus 6 continuous. With the adjustment, we show 7 sheetfed and 5 continuous. Sheetfed is still continuing to be more widely reported than roll-fed installations for the seventh month, and considering that 2 of the installations are label roll format, the disparity between 2-up continuous inkjet and sheetfed is notable. One company, DS Group is bringing their second Kyocera TASKalfa Pro 15000c to their Clacton-on-Sea, England operation. Breaking down the formats:

  • 5 B3 Sheetfed
  • 3 B2 Sheetfed
  • 1 B1 Sheetfed
  • 4 2-Up Roll
  • 2 Label (narrow) Roll

The Screen label presses and the AccurioJet KM-1 HD B2 Sheet press use UV ink. The rest of the installs (12) are aqueous inkjet.

Other than the label presses and corrugated packaging installation, there were a lot of companies doing more than one thing. That includes 2 in plant operations and an Online Printer (PrintOClock). One third of the installations are being used for direct mail (not counting the inplant/online printing sites) and we also saw 4 citing commercial/marketing applications, 3 books and instances of transaction printing and magazines.

One of the in plant operations, Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints Printing Division has acquired an HP PageWide T250 HD to complement their Fujifilm J Press 720 (purchased in 2021) and produces a huge variety of applications on the presses including magazines. Valley Print Logistics also reports a wide array of applications produced on their Fujifilm J Press 750HS.

OEMs by the numbers for January (without 2021 installs): 3 HP presses, 3 Canon, and 1 each for Domino, Fujifilm, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, Ricoh and Screen.

Here’s the first report of 2023 with helpful links to the company website. You can find more details on individual press models on the Inkjet Device Finder.
