Packaging 2020 – Inkjet Drivers and Innovations

By Inkjet Insight / Published:

Shifting market requirements are creating new demands and innovations in the packaging supply chain. While pandemic driven economic uncertainty will undoubtedly have some effect on consumer purchasing habits, consumer product companies and their supply chains that were already looking for new ways to address market changes will now have to shift into high gear. This increased pressure will be the spark to drive continued inkjet innovation at a faster rate.

The Canon LabelStream 4000 series is an industrial-scale four to six-colour UV inkjet press (W+CMYK+O) targeted at the production of self-adhesive labels. The press is available as a digital-only reel-to-reel configuration and can expand to a full hybrid configuration with a custom mix of additional flexo, embellishment and finishing units, turning it into a fully integrated single-pass label conversion line. Based on reliable UV inkjet technology, print speeds of up to 75 m/min (246 ft/min) with two print widths of 330 mm (13”) and 410 mm (16”) ensure industry-leading productivity of up to 1,845 m²/hr (19,859 ft²/hr). In its hybrid configuration a high level of integration with optimized synching and setup management further supports production efficiency.

In 2020 Canon introduced the orange colour extension to super-size the gamut to match additional brand colours without compromising on print speed. Thanks to high pigment load of the Xaar 2001 printhead technology, the LabelStream inks attain a colour gamut of 96% at a Delta E 2000 smaller than 2, allowing for highest print quality labels and accurately matched colours on standard label stock. The white ink channel achieves up to 80% opacity in a single pass.

Miyakoshi introduces the MJP30AXF press, a revolutionary solution to the flexible packaging markets addressing requirements for efficiency, food-safety and sustainability currently lacking in most solutions. The printing of flexible packaging is dominated by traditional analogue technologies such as gravure and flexography which enable very high productivity at low cost for long run printing jobs. However, since the packaging run lengths are getting shorter in response to demands for customization and personalization, brand owners often find that these technologies are not as economical or flexible. The new MJP30AXF press is optimized for batching and production of small jobs on one single web with no waste between jobs making it a more sustainable solution. Using water-based inks is friendly to the environment and also food safe. In addition to efficiency and sustainability, the press provides excellent print quality with resolution of 1200 dpi and CMYK plus digital white. Automatic registration control and missing nozzle compensation minimize printing errors while the 750mm (30inch) print width and 50 meter per minute printing speed deliver high productivity.
